Parks and recreation
Vision
A city in which everyone has convenient access to great parks, healthy recreation, and welcoming cultural experiences.
Questions
How can we invite nature back into the city by turning vacant land into new parks and greenway corridors?
How can we improve maintenance and programming at existing parks?
What else can the city do to support summer youth programs?
Recommendations
Expand public access to Lake Erie, the city’s greatest natural asset, by following through on previous city lakefront plans, the Metroparks’ studies of lakeshore habitat improvement, and ideas of civic groups such as the Green Ribbon Coalition.
Support the 10-minute Walk Campaign to ensure all residents live within a half-mile, or a 10-minute walk, of a clean, safe park (now at 83%, so finish the job). The pandemic has made everyone aware of how much people need accessible open space.
Support the platform of the Cleveland Parks and Greenspace Coalition to ensure equitable access to quality greenspace and transparency in park development and management.
Support efforts to link the soon-to-be-completed Towpath Trail in Cleveland with trail branches through neighborhoods.
Work with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to develop more green infrastructure to manage stormwater runoff.
Work with West Side Market tenants and neighborhood groups to find a best-in-class operator for this city landmark. (The city recently hired a public market consultant to recommend improvements.)
